Astrophotography

Welcome to this new page on my site. I’ve recently started getting into Astrophotography! It’s something I’ve dabbled with a little bit in the past – quite often taking shots of the moon and then during lockdown in 2020, I managed to get a decent image of the Neowise Comet.

But I’ve never really got ‘seriously’ into it until the summer 2022 and I’m hooked!. Now I’m certainly not an expert, nor am I ever likely to be! I certainly don’t have the budget for lots of specialised kit, but will be trying to make the most out of basic equipment.

I’m finding that Astrophotography is a way of using my photography skills in a totally different discipline. In sports it’s all about short, fast shutter speeds to capture split second action and freeze movement; in Astrophotography the emphasis is long shutter speeds (the longer the better) often photographing what you cannot actually see, then long hours using processing techniques to draw out details that are barely visible. I’ve been using Photoshop for years, but have learned so much more using it for Astro!

So this page is for if you want to share in my ‘journey’ – I’ll post some of my successes (and probably many failures) and what I’m learning in The Newbie Astrotog Blog. If you’re also an Astrotog, get in touch it would be good to compare experiences!

Here’s a couple of images from before I took this plunge and some more recent shots too.
